Celebrate the legacy of Miriam Ortiz-Rush and the impact of this newly renovated public park, formerly Lawn-Madison Park, a centerpiece of the Southwest Detroit Shoreway Neighborhood Plan. Event details here.

Miriam Ortiz-Rush was born in Cleveland in 1953 and passed away on July 7, 2017. She was a longtime resident of the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood and continually served her community. Miriam started Cleveland's first Spanish/English newspaper, El Nuevo Dia, in 1989. She was a fierce advocate of the Latino community, and El Nuevo Dia was a labor of her love for the community. Miriam worked for Cuyahoga Municipal Housing Association from 1990 to 1998 and then served the Cleveland Municipal Housing Court as the Personal Bailiff for the late Honorable Judge Raymond Pianka until 2017.

Miriam Ortiz-Rush led an exemplary life advocating for social justice and equality with compassion and generosity. Miriam was married to her husband Daryl Rush, Director of Community Development for the City of Cleveland, for 24 years. Daryl was truly the love of her life, and together they had four children, twelve grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.

The renovated park honors Miriam's exceptional devotion to community and is a significant investment by the City of Cleveland in the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood. It is the City's first park dedicated to a Latina. The park features modern play structures and showcases public art by Detroit Shoreway resident Haley Morris.
